Modified molecular weight imide oligomers and co-oligomers (PEPI) end-capped with a non-reactive or reactive group, including phenylethynyl appendages, are amides, which are end capped with unreactive or reactive groups, including phenylethynyl appendages An acid oligomer or a co-oligomer. The amine-terminated amide acid oligomer or co-oligomer is prepared by reacting the dianhydride with an excess of diamine capped with phenylethynylphthalic anhydride or monofunctional anhydride containing phenylethynyl anion. The anhydride terminal amide acid oligomer or co-oligomer is reacted with a diamine containing a phenylethynyl appendage and an excess of dianhydride followed by end capping with an aphenylethynylamine or monofunctional amine. The weight is carried out in a polar aprotic solvent such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone or N, N-diamethylacetamide under a nitrogen atmosphere at room temperature. The amide acid oligomer or co-oligomer is thermally or chemically cyclically dehydrated to an amide oligomer. Polymers and copolymers made from these materials have higher mechanical properties of carbon fibers, adhesives and resins reinforced at temperatures up to 204C in the wet state without sacrificing melt flow behavior and processability compared to similar materials It exhibits inherent properties including higher glass transition temperature after curing. These materials are useful as adhesives, coatings, films, molded articles and composite matrices.
