The present invention divides fault management of an asynchronous transfer mode exchange into hardware fault state handling and fault data management, wherein the hardware fault state handling is performed by a software module operating in the exchange and the fault data management is operated on a workstation. Performed as a software module, it minimizes signal exchange and reduces the load on the exchange processor.
