The linearly polarized light is collected by the lens 4 and is incident on the liquid crystal sample 5 at an incident angle distributed continuously. The dependence of the transmitted light polarization state on the incident angle is measured by a rotation analysis technique or the like, whereby the pretilt angle of the liquid crystal sample is determined.
