A system and method for preventing unauthorized copying of digital recordings is provided. A duplication-status code (FIG. 1) is accompanied by each recording 12, one of which indicates that the recording can not be replicated at all. The compatibility player 10 is designed to prevent play of any recordable disc containing a " non-replicable " code. There is a discrepancy between the code and the medium containing the code for inhibiting the play of the medium.
