The sealing ring (9) is made of polytetrafluoroethylene and is used on the lip (8) on the low-pressure end of the cover plate (4a) of a centrifugal pump rotor (4). It prevents leakage flow (20) of high-pressure water back to the low-pressure entrance region of the rotor. The sealing ring has a radial sealing surface (17) pushed against a corresponding surface (19) on the fixed housing (7) by the pressure of the high-pressure water. Lugs on the outer diameter of the sealing ring extend radially through slots in the fixed housing to hold the seal ring in place. The seal ring has an extension (24) lying in contact with the outside surface of the lip on the rotor.
