The IC engine has a fuel vapour absorber to collect excess fuel vapour from the fuel tank. This fuel is desorbed when the absorber is full, by flushing the vapour into the inlet manifold. A control system determines the fuel concentration desorbed into the inlet manifold. The idling control has a learning mode to set the optimum engine conditions. This learning mode is inhibited if the desorbed fuel concentration is above a set level. If the desorbed fuel concentration is below a set level while the idling setting operates then the desorption process is blocked, ie. the desorption process is subject to a simple priority control which determines if the desorption process, or the idling control, has priority.
