Suction apparatus for sucking up dirt or material containing the same, e.g. dusty air has connecting union on apparatus lower part located on the same side as pivot axis and above this. A suction apparatus for sucking up dirt or material containing the same, like dusty air, has a lower part containing a chamber for collecting the dirt and an upper part. This can be pivoted upwards about a horizontal pivot axis at the side from a normal position where it overlaps the dirt chamber and closes the top side of the lower part into an open position in which the dirt chamber is accessible. There is a sideways connecting union to which a suction hose leading outside can be connected, a suction aggregate to suck up the dirty material and a separating aggregate to retain the dirt. The connecting union (2) on the apparatus lower part (4) is located on the same side as the pivot axis (7) and above this. From the side it is connected to the upper region of the dirt chamber. The upper part (6) forms a wall on this union side of the apparatus which has, at least in the normal position of the upper part, an opening (20) allowing the upper part to pivot. The opening is contained in a region of the upper part wall set back inwards which bounds an open-upwards trough (23) of the upper part wall. Into this dips the hose pipe (3) connected to the union in the open position of the upper part.
