The equipment is basically of conventional design with a material hopper (5), a centrifuging wheel (14) with broadcasting paddles (15), driven by a vertical shaft (13) that also drives rubber mixer arms in the hopper. A shield (16) deflects material away from the operator/tractor attached to a draw bar. The drive for the wheel and mixer is derived from a gearbox halfway between the wheels (3), itself driven by axle (2), when engaged. The axle is free-running in wheel bearings and fixed in an external bush. The shaft therefore remains stationary until the coupling (4) is engaged. The coupling is a housing attached to bush that carries a spring-loaded pin which can engage in one of several radial slots in the wheel hub. An oblique cut at the end of the pin ensures that the drive is effective only when the trailer moves in one particular direction. The pin can be turned into one of two opposed positions to determine what direction that will be. The pin can also be totally disengaged by a bayonet type of slot in its housing. A mixer in the hopper distributes granules and breaks up agglomeration. It is made of rubber to avoid excessive loads for the tractor or the manual operator. A number of secondary construction features are described.
