The invention relates to a scrubbing tower for flue gas desulphurisation plants. The fundamental structure of the scrubbing tower includes a scrubbing liquid sump (1), an absorption zone (2) having a lower flue gas entry (3) and upper flue gas exit (4), a multiplicity of spray nozzles (5) for the feed of scrubbing liquid and demister (6) upstream of the flue gas exit (4). According to the invention, the spray nozzles (5) are arranged to spray upwardly in the upper region of the absorption zone (2) and generate spray jets (12) of liquid droplets directed in the direction of flow of the flue gas, which droplets reverse their direction of motion before reaching the demister and pass in countercurrent to the flue gas through the absorption zone (2) to the scrubbing liquid sump (1).
