PURPOSE:To obtain a new compound, useful as a thermochromic and a photochromic materials and capable of simultaneously achieving purification of a coloring type component and fixation of a colored state. CONSTITUTION:A compound expressed by formula I (R1 is 1-20C alkyl, aralkyl, methacryloxymethyl, etc.; R2 to R5 are H, 1-6C alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, 1-5C alkoxy, halogen, etc.; R6 and R7 are H, 1-6C alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, cyano, etc,; R8 is H, 1-6C alkyl, chloromethyl, etc.; Y is O or S), e.g. 3-chloromethyl-5- nitrosalicylaldehyde. The compound expressed by formula I is obtained by dissolving an indolinospirobenzopyran derivative expressed by formula II in a polar organic solvent (e.g. methanol) and then irradiating the resultant solution with ultraviolet light, e.g. by using an ultrahigh-pressure mercury lamp.
