The synthesis of aluminum hydrate precursors from mixtures of inorganic aluminum sources, as cation-monomers or cation-oligomers, and surfactants, to produce aluminas of controlled porosity. The hydrated Al compound is represented by the general formula nS, mM, Al2O3, xH2O, in which the moles of surfactant S (n) is 0.1 - 2.2, the moles of cation M (m) is 0.001 - 0.6, and the moles of water is 0.5 - 8. Independent claims are also included for the method of preparation and use of the products.
