Transition metal salicylaldimine chelate compounds of formula (I) and intermediate of formula (IV) wherein R, R1, R2, R3, R4 & R5 are hydrogen, halogen alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl or R3 & R4 together form a carbocyclic group, or R1 & R5 from an oxyhydrocarbylene group; n is 0 or 1, when n is 1, R6 is hydrogen, halogen alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl group, when n is 0, R6 is an allyl group; A is oxygen, nitrogen or sulphur; z is 0 when A is oxygen or sulphur and 1 when A is nitrogen; L is a coordination ligand; X is hydrogen or an electron withdrawing group; M is a group IV or group VIII transition metal. Compounds of formula (I) are useful as polymerization catalysts alone or in combination with adjunct agent and/or Lewis base.
