Device for measuring the viscosity of engine oil for internal combustion engines for powering ships

An appts. for measuring the viscosity of ship engine oil is located in the oil return line (3) from the i.c. engine (2) to the oil circulation tank (1) and includes (a) a falling ball viscometer (8) which is vertically positioned and suspended (for ship heeling compensation) in a bypass measuring line (4); (b) a magnetic valve (15) which is positioned between the return line (3) and the viscometer (8) and which controls oil passage to allow viscometer ball lifting by incoming oil in its open position and to allow viscosity measurement in its closed position; (c) inductive proximity switches (11) which are arranged one above the other at the side of the viscometer (8) and which delimit the measurement path for time measurement; and (d) a temp. sensor (13) located beyond the measurement path and connected, together with the proximity switches (11), to a measurement detection unit, pref. a computer (9).
