The dewatered fuel is then passed by pump (20) under high pressure to an identically constructed main filter (21) from where the particle-free fuel passes to the injectors. Any surplus is returned via line (22) to a reservoir (13). A sensor (23) determines when water must be removed. Pump (25) is then activated to draw the water out through line (18) and discard it. Valves (24,26) allow pump (25) to fulfill a dual function of removing water and supplying raw fuel to the filter. The filter is required to remove both water and particles. Fuel enters first into a prefilter (10) in which the water settles by gravity in the lower portion (17). Provision is made to warm the filter in severe winter conditions by using warmed fuel as the heat exchange medium. Various pressure sensors are fitted to give warning when filter elements need to be changed.
