A transgene (I) comprises (i) a sequence (Ia) that encodes either the complete amyloid precursor protein (APP) or a part of its A beta peptide (AbP), but is not identical with the part of the APP sequence that encodes the complete AbP; (ii) optionally one or more additional coding and/or non-coding sequences and (iii) a promoter functional in Caenorhabditis elegans. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) expression vector containing (I); (2) transgenic C. elegans containing (I) or the vector of (a); (3) production of the nematodes of (b) by microinjection into C. elegans germ cells; and (4) an Sp-C100 fusion protein (II) of 117 amino acids (aa), reproduced.
