The method involves detecting a current flowing into the control unit (1) via its output (4) and generating an error signal (11) depending on the detected current. The load (5) is switched off if the error signal occurs. The power supply to the control unit can be switched off if the error signal occurs. An Independent claim is also included for a control unit with a circuit for detecting a fault current.
