The drive mechanism for a printer has at least one drive (1) with external rotor motor. The rotor (2) has permanent magnets (3) and at least one cylinder (4,4'). The stator (5) contains the coils (6) and is firmly joined to the side wall (7) of the printer. At least one of the drives (1') has a series of cog wheels (8,9). The periphery of the rotor has a toothed ring (8), and is joined to a cylinder.
