To protect the soles and heels of footwear, a block (1) of hard rubber or plastics contains extremely hard components (2) which are introduced during or after molding or mechanically. The hard components are of tungsten carbide, silicon carbide, etc. to project through the surface of the block. The extremely hard components (2) have a metal body (3), to be fitted with a very hard section by crimping or welding. An intermediate layer is of an elastic material, for shock absorbing and increased walking comfort. The very hard components are several mm below the level between the sole and block. The very hard components are positioned in the block (1) in longitudinal and lateral rows, and can be placed to give free zones to allow cutting to fit soles of various dimensions.
