A method and system according to the present invention utilizes existing equipment and divides the treatment entry dose into segments (402). Between each segment the field, relative to the beam, is translated (404) and the leaf positions are adjusted to maintain the outline (406) of the tumor. By integrating the methodology identified above with a hardware system, one can achieve radiation therapy by precise compliance while minimizing leakage. Furthermore, through the present invention, higher dose rates can be achieved while not appreciably affecting the treatment time.
