P An automatic receiver gain control includes a variable gain receiver (304, 308, 312) having a control input and being responsive to a gain control signal to adjust the output level of the receiver. A controller (114) is coupled to the variable gain receiver. The controller controls a quality of the received signal and a power level of the received signal. The controller generates a control signal to control the gain of the variable gain receiver based on signal quality and power level. The controller controls the gain based on the power level of the received signal and selectively controls the gain based on the quality of the signal. /P
