The invention concerns a method for the sanitization of sludge resulting from waste water purification treatment so as to obtain complete inactivation of pathogenic germs contained therein and a device for implementing said method, comprising a reactor (10) wherein is performed the sanitization of the sludge for intensive elimination of the pathogenic germs contained therein. The invention is characterised in that the device comprises a heat exchanger for gas-gas regeneration (11) indirectly heating the sludge (12) to be sanitized, said exchanger primary fluid consisting of the products of gas combustion digesting the sludge and the secondary fluid consisting of said reactor gas roof (16) gases, continuously recycled.
