PURPOSE:To obtain a teaching method for an image inspecting apparatus capable of eliminating a burden of a teaching operation, reducing the time for the teaching operation and eliminating nonuniformity of a color extraction reference range. CONSTITUTION:Data 23 on a color distribution at an inspection object image plane position of color image data on an object of inspection and data 24, 25 and 2 on color distributions at inspection object abutting image plane positions abutting the inspection object image plane position of the color image data on the object of inspection are extracted. The data obtained by removing the color distributions 24, 25 and 2 at the inspection object abutting image plane positions from the color distribution 23 at the inspection object image plane position are set as data 27 on a color extraction reference range of the inspection object image plane position of the object of inspection, and these data are so stored in a color extraction reference range table memory as to correspond to address data.
