PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biocatalytic process for producing an optically active phenylalanine analogues from an arylacrylic acid. ;SOLUTION: A yeast fungus, Rhodotorula graminis, including phenylalanine ammonialyase introduces an ammonia molecule into the double bond of a stereospecifically 3-position substituted acrylic acid.
