PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new carbonaceous material satisfying high strength at high temperatures (high heat shock resistance), high reliability as a material (toughness, impact resistance, abrasion resistance), environmental resistance (corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, radiation resistance), etc., and lightweightness as well in view of energy saving and easy handleability, and also subject to substantially no oxidation even at temperatures of as high as ≥800°C, pref. ≥1,000°C in the atmosphere, and to provide a method for producing such a carbonaceous material.;SOLUTION: This method for producing such a carbonaceous material as to have an oxidation-resistant protective layer subject substantially to no oxidation even at ≥800°C in the atmosphere on the surface of carbon fibers comprises forming, on the surface of a carbonaceous material, at least a boron-contg. layer and, as desired, layer(s) of glass and/or ceramic, as an oxidation-resistant protective layer subject substantially to no oxidation even at ≥800°C in the atmosphere.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
