The method involves producing fuel gas having solid fuel particles entrained in it. The fuel gas is then separated from the solid fuel particles, which are then burned with air in a reactor to produce flue gases having solid particles entrained in it. The flue gases are separated from the latter solid particles. The latter are passed to a heat exchanger for cooling a portion of the latter solid particles and passing the cooled portion of the particles and the remaining portion of the particles from the heat exchanger back to the reactor. The ratio of the cooled portion of the particles to the remaining portion of the particles is adjustable to control the temp of the reactor.
