A method for doubling the vertical refresh rate of an image sequence generated in an interlaced scanning process, whereby said image sequence consists of image segments in the form of pixel signals. According to said method, at least one image segment (H) preceding a respectively real image segment (A) is stored. A first image segment which is complementary to said real image segment (A) is generated in the form of pixels by comparing the pixel signals of the real image segment (A) with pixel signals from the stored image segment (H). A second image segment which is complementary to the real image segment (A) is generated for each pixel by forming a mean value of two pixel signals for pixels of the real image segment (A) whereby the pixels thereof are vertically adjacent thereto. A pixel of the first or second complementary image segment is selected according to spatial and temporal modification of the pixel signals and vertically adjacent pixels.
