PURPOSE: An apparatus for automatically adjusting a gain of a receiving voice volume of a portable telephone and control method therefor is provided to hear a receiving voice having a uniform voice volume by performing an accurate volume adjustment through a volume up/down switch. CONSTITUTION: An analog processing unit in base band(300) receives a RF signal outputted from a RF system(200) to demodulate an analog audio data and various information data and converts demodulated analog audio data and various information data into digital signals. The analog processing unit in base band(300) receives an audio level value detected in an audio detecting unit(800) and converts the received audio level value into a digital signal. A MSN(mobile station modem)(400) receives the digital audio level value outputted from the analog processing unit in base band(300) to compare the received digital audio level value with an audio level setting value stored in a memory unit(100), and outputs an audio gain control signal to a vocoder(410) and a CODEC unit(500) for matching level values of two signals when the received digital audio level value is not identical to the audio level setting value.
