FIELD: organic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: described is method of preparing 3-ethyl-5-methyl ester of 2-[2-(N-phthalimido)ethoxymethyl-4-(2-chlorphenyl)-1,4-dihydro-6- methyl-3,5-pyridinedicaroxylic acid of formula I: by reacting 2- chlorobenzaldehyde with 4-[2-(N-phthalimido)ethoxyacetoacetic acid ethyl ester in isopropyl alcohol solvent using pyridine, piperidine or salt s thereof as catalyst at temperatures from 25 C 35 C to gibe benzylidine derivative of 4-[2- (N-phthalimido)aceto acetic acid ethyl ester which is reacted with methylaminoprotonate added in portions to acetic acid at temperatures from 35 to 55 C to give product.
