The appliance has a stripper blade (5) which is relatively narrow compared to the width of the roller. A pick up plate (10) is combined with the blade so that a sheet of paper (2) removed from the roller (4) is guided along it. Consequently, after the initial release of the paper it continues to be transported away from the roller. Preferably the pick up plate has a curved surface.
