Branched unsaturated fatty alcohol ether sulfates are claimed which are obtained by: (a) removing the monomer fraction from conventionally dimerized 16-22C unsaturated fatty acids; (b) converting the branched, unsaturated fatty acids to the methyl ester; (c) hydrogenating the ester to the corresponding alcohol with retention of the unsaturation; and (d) conventionally alkoxylating, sulfating and neutralizing the alcohol with retention of the unsaturation.
