Controlling and optimizing hot rolling of a metal strip comprises passing an electromagnetic radiation through the metal strip emitted from an X-ray device and determining online and evaluating on the reverse side of the metal; determining crystallographic conversions, structure conversions and/or chemical conversions at a determined temperature; and deriving suitable process control and/or regulation parameters for optimizing the process depending on the degree of conversion and/or course of conversion and/or carrying out an online adaptation of the process model. Preferred Features: The spectrum of the electromagnetic radiation is evaluated with neuronal networks.
