The separator vessel (1) is an (e.g. oval) module. It contains a continuous, prefabricated upright partition (2) making a complete gas-tight seal all round, i.e. to the cover (5), base (4) and inner wall (3). The partition divides the vessel into a sludge interceptor (6) and subsequent storage vessel (7). These are interconnected by an overflow pipe (9). Each has a manhole and access shaft (16) in the cover. Preferred features: The partition lies transversely across the vessel length. The waste water feed (14) enters the sludge interceptor (6), discharging into the coarse separation chamber (12). The supply connection (15) is self-closing to prevent overflow. A weir partition (11) optionally separates coarse and fine sludge interceptors, sealed at the base and wall. A light fluid separator is pre-installed in the optionally-divided sludge interceptor. Its inlet is in the fine sludge interceptor, its outlet forming the overflow between the sludge interceptor and the storage vessel (7). In the latter, especially at the main partition (2) the biological purification tank (17) is located. It is sealed from the storage vessel. The plant is further detailed, further use of prefabricated construction in steel or plastic being noted, to produce the compact, conventional operational units. A scum handling arrangement is described. Further partitioning and pipework is described.
