In the frame (1) are located a solenoid magnetic core (6) and coil (7), in the leaf (8) a U-shaped armature (11) with a projecting non-magnetic insert (13) matching the gap (14) between the extended pole faces (2,3) of the core. For remote locking the armature is of soft iron drawn against the core when the solenoid is energized and retained by remanent magnetism. For unlocking, the armature is a permanent magnet of opposite polarity to the solenoid and is released from engagement when the solenoid is energized
