In controlling steam sterilization, especially with formaldehyde-steam, using carrier material treated with aqueous chromotropic acid disodium salt dihydrate solution (I), as in DE 19846325, as chemo-indicator that undergoes color change(s) as the result of chemical reactions during sterilization and indicates the process phase, aminocarboxylic acids, peptides, acetates, esters and/or salts of hydroxycarboxylic acids are added to (I).
