The method involves using a model of the drive train and the contact between the wheel and running surface as a system of differential equations with the traction function gradient as an unknown parameter. An estimation is performed with a stimulation signal required for estimation superimposed on the engine torque demand signal. The reaction of the drive to the stimulation signal is determined by measuring the revolution rate in the drive train.
