Nucleic acid sequences from alkane metabolizing Candida yeasts, encoding cytochrome b5-polypeptide, its fragments, variants and mutations, are new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a cytochrome b5-polypeptide encoded by the novel nucleic acid; (2) cytochrome b5-polypeptide comprising a 126 residue amino acid sequence, fully defined in the specification, its variants with deletions or modifications, which have cytochrome b5-activity; (3) vectors comprising the novel nucleic acids; (4) host cells comprising the vector of (3); (5) antibodies specific for the cytochrome b5-polypeptide; (6) use of the nucleic acid or the resulting polypeptide for stimulating the activity of cytochrome P450-enzymes.
