Direct injection spark ignited internal combustion engine (10) includes several combustion chambers and is controlled by an electronic engine controller (12). The engine has an electronically controlled inlet device such as an electronic throttle unit and an electronically controlled outlet device such as a variable cam timing system. The outlet control device controls flow from the intake manifold (44) into the cylinder. The inlet control device controls flow into the intake manifold. A signal is generated representing a request from a driver. In response to this signal the inlet and outlet control devices are adjusted to improve drive feel. The outlet control device is adjusted to affect cylinder flow to a greater extent than the inlet control device, thus providing an increase and overshoot in a cylinder flow. An independent claim is also included for the article of manufacture.
