A substrate comprises a transparent substrate and a pre-determined number of pairs of a first transparent film having a high refractive index and a second transparent film with a low refractive index each composed of a dielectric material. The first transparent film has a refractive index of less than 1.8 at a wavelength of 550 nm and the second transparent film has a refractive index of not more than 1.5 at a wavelength of 550 nm. The pre-determined number is a whole number not less than 1. The first and second films have a thickness such that the degree of light reflection is 5-95 % in a visible light region for the first and second films. Preferred Features: The first and second films are made of dielectric materials with low light absorption, e.g. silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide, zirconium dioxide, tantalum dioxide and tin oxide.
