An automotive exhaust system has an oxygen sensor in an elongated housing with a reference gas chamber at one end separated from the other end by two metal covers. Both covers have an air hole, the second of which feeds the reference gas. The first metal cover has a cylindrical ceramic insulator which defines the reference gas cross-sectional area and with a hole for the sensor connecting wire. The cylindrical ceramic insulator has a groove on its outer face defining the gas passage between the air inlet defined by the metal cover and the reference gas chamber.
