A method for multiplying charge in a CCD cell comprising the steps of temporarily holding charge in a potential well in the CCD cell, creating an electric field region in a portion of the CCD cell separated from the potential well, the electric field being of sufficient strength to cause impact ionization by carriers traversing the field, and causing the charge in the potential well to flow into the electric field region, the flow resulting in multiplication of the charge by impact ionization.
