The invention concerns an automatic reader for an apparatus utilising agar diffusion technique, comprising inside a mount frame illuminating means (17), an electronic CDD camera (19), and means for placing a Petri dish in the illumination field of said illuminating means and said camera field. The invention is characterised in that the mount frame comprises automatic gripping means (74-82) for gripping the edges of a lid of the dish and automatic lifting means (70-73, 83-87) for lowering the gripping means into a low position for gripping or placing the lid and for lifting the gripping means into a high position, wherein the lid is outside said illumination and camera fields.
