the system includes modification of header routing information during transfer of packets. The procedure provides processing for data packets in a communication network comprises two end bridges separated by at least one intermediate bridge. The packet includes an information field of predetermined length reserved for routing information. The procedure includes receiving the data packet at an intermediate bridge, called a relay bridge, and removing routing information relating to the route already passed by the packet. With the use of an index this routing information may be recovered and the routing information restored for onward transmission of the packet.
