The supporting rod (7), connected to spinal column vertebrae by screws (3) or hooks (4), is made from a malleable metal alloy with an elongation at rupture in traction tests of over 20 per cent. The alloy can be over-hardened and based on stainless steel, or a grade 2 titaniumbased alloy. The rod is bent to the required shape before fixing to the spine.
