Apparatus for sanding a vehicle (10, fig. 4) comprises a movable head 24, a carriage 44 mounted on the head 24 and movable in a direction perpendicular to the vehicle surface, a sanding disc 22 and an air cylinder 67 or electrical system between the head 24 and the carriage 44 controlled by a load cell 71 for maintaining substantially constant pressure between the sanding disc 22 and the vehicle. The apparatus is movable in along a path parallel to and in synchronism with the vehicle as it moves. The sanding disc 22 has a hole (64, fig. 2) at its centre for feeding aerated water through its drive shaft 49 and has air admitting holes (66, fig.2) arranged towards its circumference. A worn sanding disc is removed by means of an anvil and gripper (76 and 78, fig. 3A) and a new disc added from a stack (80, fig. 3A) held in a magazine, the magazine having weights (92, fig. 3A) overlying the edge of the stack to thereby enable the removal of only the foremost disc.
