PURPOSE: To provide a method for detecting the level of a glass raw material layer in a glass melting furnace capable of surely detecting the level of an undulate or uneven glass raw material layer surface without being influenced by the temperature and gas flow in the furnace. ;CONSTITUTION: Light is radiated to the surface of a glass raw material M in a glass melting furnace 10 at a prescribed incidence angle and the image of the irradiated area on the glass raw material layer M is picked up with a CCD camera 12. The image data of the irradiated area and the other area are processed as a binary image data and the coordinates of the gravity center of the irradiated area of the image are determined.
