PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication unit able to be maintained in a standby mode with a more reliable method, to provide an operation maintenance system having very low power consumption and to provide a system able to be installed in a portable telephone. SOLUTION: The communication unit provided with the operation maintenance system has a main power source (14), a processing unit (10) energized by the main power source, means (26, 28, 16) that start the communication unit at a programmable time, a clock (24) given to an auxiliary power source (22) to generate a current time, and a means (12) that automatically and periodically updates the start time after the current time when only the main power source ensures supply of electric power. This invention is applied to the portable telephone.
