PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately normalize even a word image in which a character line is inclined and the sizes of characters are different in order to improve the accuracy of word recognition about a device for normalizing a word image for handwritten word recognition, etc.;SOLUTION: A characteristic value calculating part 2 calculates a characteristic value in a direction perpendicular to the character line of a word image inputted by a word image inputting part 1, and a division point extracting part 3 extracts a division point according to the characteristic value. A divided image generating part 4 generates partial images according to the division point and transfers the partial images to normalizing parts 5-1 to 5-n. The 5-1 to 5-n vertically normalize each partial image. A normalized word image generating part 6 adds the normalized partial images, horizontally normalizes the entire images and generates a normalized word image.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
