The present invention relates to a catalyst composition for oligomerization and co-oligomerization of alkenes, which composition contains a first component being represented by the substituted titanium, zirconium or hafnium bis(cyclopentadienyl) compound containing also a substituent, which is attached to the metal and which is capable to react with a cation, and a second catalyst component being represented by ionic combination of a volume anion containing a plurality of boron atoms and which is substantially non-coordinating under the reaction conditions used, with a cation, wherein the substituted bis-cyclopentadienyl ligand pair is represented by bis-tetramethyl cyclopentadienyl.
