The present invention relates to compositions in which the active ingredient (s) comprises at least one group derived from (1) a generic b- (3,4-dihydroxyphenyl) lactic acid and / or (2) a generic caffeic acid, which are: in the extracts of plants belonging to the genus Salvia, wherein R1 is -OH, -O- or a bond, R2 is -H or a bond; R3 is -OH or -O-; R4 is a bond or -C (O) -R5 wherein R5 is -OH or a bond; R6 is -H or a bond; and R7 is -H or a bond, and the active ingredient has a molecular weight greater than 190dalton. Preferred active ingredients include conjugated forms, such as dimer, trimer, tetramer, and higher number of polymers of the above groups; the most preferred agents are dimers, trimeric, tetrameric and higher-numbered polymers of salvianolic acid.
