Nitric oxide, nitrosoni-nm, S-nitrosothiols, and S-nitroso-proteins can be de-tested in biological samples,using a method which in-volves injection of samplesinto a photolysis cell, prior todetection of chemilumines-cence generated by the reac-tion between nitric oxide and see Formula Iozone. To detect S-nitrosoth-iols and S-nitroso-proteinsseparate aliquots of the samesamples are subjected to pre-treatment with mercurousion, and a protein-precipitat-ing agent, respectively, andthe resulting nitric oxide sig-nals are compared to thosegenerated by untreated sam-ples. This method is usefulfor monitoring the levels ofnitric oxide bioactivity inboth normal physiologicalstates, and diesease states,such as septic shock, atherosclerosis, thrombosis, hyperhomocysteinemia,pulmonary hypertension, malignancy, infections andcentral nervous systems disorders.
